A number of nandrolone cases in athletics occurred in 1999, which included high-profile athletes such as Merlene Ottey , Dieter Baumann and Linford Christie . [50] However, the following year the detection method for nandrolone at the time was proved to be faulty. Mark Richardson , a British Olympic relay runner who tested positive for the substance, gave a significant amount of urine samples in a controlled environment and delivered a positive test for the drug, demonstrating that false positives could occur, which led to an overhaul of his competitive ban. [51]

Many therapeutic approaches are aimed at the EGFR. Cetuximab and panitumumab are examples of monoclonal antibody inhibitors . However the former is of the IgG1 type, the latter of the IgG2 type; consequences on antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity can be quite different. [28] Other monoclonals in clinical development are zalutumumab , nimotuzumab , and matuzumab . The monoclonal antibodies block the extracellular ligand binding domain. With the binding site blocked, signal molecules can no longer attach there and activate the tyrosine kinase.

A case report exists of rhabdomyolysis in a patient taking an extract of C. mukul 300 mg 3 times daily who was previously sensitized (increased creatine kinase) to lipid-lowering statins. 59 A similar case report of increased transaminases exists for a combination preparation containing guggulsterol and red yeast rice extract; however, fungal metabolites found in the red yeast rice extract were suspected to be responsible for the adverse effect because the metabolites are structurally similar to lovastatin. The patient had previously experienced hepatotoxicity while taking lovastatin. 65 A case report of hepatotoxicity exists for a combination product (fat burner) that included guggul. 66
